Michael Sheen Talks About Working With Younger Cast on 'New Moon'

EW's Popwatch has a short interview with Volturi leader Michael Sheen:

Ashley spoke very highly of her time working with you.

She’s lovely. They all were very nice but they kind of treated me like an elderly uncle. They were all on their best behavior when they are around me. I just want to be down with the kids but that doesn’t really work out to well.

You have great command of the scene with the Volturi and you can tell that those other actors had great respect for you.

It helps coming into something where they all know each other and have already done one movie together. They’ve also been involved in the whole phenomenon together so I think they’ve bonded a lot. So when you’re coming in to do a big scene like the one we did in the film, it helps if the character you are playing is higher status than the other ones. At least it gives you a bit more confidence. So that certainly helped.

What do you think audiences are responding to with Twilight?

I think it’s a whole combination of things coming together. Especially for adolescent girls and also for older audiences, Stephenie [Meyer] takes the incredibly powerful experiences you have as a teenager and treats them absolutely fearlessly and gives them the respect they deserve. The first book and film are about the first time you fall in love. And New Moon is all about the first time your heart is broken. These are some of the most powerful experiences you can have in your life, regardless of your age. And there is a tendency to kind of trivialize those things as you get older, to kind of be patronizing about those things. And Stephenie treats them absolutely seriously. She also, very cleverly in a way, said that the vampires are stunningly gorgeous as a way to lure their prey. That’s very clever because in casting the film you have very beautiful people who are very good as well.

That’s my plan.”

We can think of 140 mil­lion rea­sons that’s not going to hap­pen – all of them dol­lars. On open­ing week­end, New Moon made the kind of money usu­ally reserved for comic-book heroes and boy wiz­ards, break­ing records for mid­night screen­ings and Fri­day box office. More sig­nif­i­cantly, Weitz has made the high­est gross­ing female-oriented movie since James Cameron opened Titanic in 1997. And, with San­dra Bul­lock scor­ing a career best open­ing with $34.5 mil­lion for The Blind Side, he’s taken part in one of the most female-driven week­ends in history–one that should wake up what­ever Hol­ly­wood exec­u­tives still under­es­ti­mate the spend­ing power of the purse. Still, Weitz won’t make any grand claims for him­self. “The degree of credit I can take is lim­ited,” he says. “I’m just the glo­ri­fied conductor.”

Excerpt From EW Article: Rob Finds His Hair to be his most difficult Costar!

Here is an excerpt from the EW magazine out this Friday:

“I swear to you I’ve never experienced anything like this. It’s every single day,” says New Moon star Robert Pattinson of the constant on-set fuss surrounding his character Edward’s signature mane. During a break from shooting Eclipse, the next film to be adapted from Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight novels, Pattinson — sitting alongside costars Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner — recounts the continuing saga. “In Twilight, they wanted me to have extensions down to my hips.” (“He’s a liar,” Stewart interjects playfully. “He doesn’t remember. He’s remembering how they made him feel, but they were just, like, down to here [pointing to her shoulders].”) Pattinson continues. “So I told them ‘Look, that’s just not going to happen.’ I said, ‘It looks like this already, I’ll come to set like this.’”

“I sound so stupid, but in a lot of ways the hair is 75 percent of my performance,” the 23-year-old actor admits, his locks now comfortably hidden under a Yankee’s cap. “So in the second one I said, ‘Listen, I need to tone down the hair. Let’s make it a little more real, a little bit more…Method,’” he says with a laugh. “And then in the third one, I’m doing fight scenes and there’s a strand going down my forehead and they’re like, ‘We need to do it again because no one will recognize you! No one will know who it is!’ I have to look like the poster at all times. Just in case they want to use any clip for the trailer. Any clip at all! There were about five people in different departments who, because of my forelock, ended up in tears.”
